15 Traditional Caribbean Desserts

Okay, confession time. I am having a moment with these Caribbean desserts. I mean, I knew they would be good. But I didn’t know they would be life-changingly yummy.

There is just something about the combination of spices and fruit and textures that makes a person feel good in their heart.

I have been eating these treats on repeat for the last few days and I have exactly zero regrets about it.

1. Puerto Rican Flan de Queso (Cheese Flan)

Okay, let’s have a real talk about flan. I know some people think it is tricky or too plain, but this recipe is here to change your mind completely.

Imagine that smooth custard finish we all know and love, but then mixed with cream cheese for a total faux-cheesecake flavor situation. It is creamy, it is dreamy, and I am officially obsessed.

The trick to getting it silkier than silk is to blend it all up and run it through a strainer to catch any lumps. Smooth sailing ahead!

2. Jamaican Rum Cake

This cake is a little bit naughty and we are absolutely here for it. It looks so innocent sitting there in its bundt pan shape with that lovely yellow cake vibe.

But one bite? You are going to be hooked. The magic happens when that sweet butter and rum syrup soaks deep into every single nook and cranny.

It ends up being moist, tender, and just a little boozy in the best possible way.

3. Tamarind Balls

We are bringing some big, punchy flavors to the party with this one! Tamarind is unique because it hits you with that sweet and sour combo that people have lots of feelings about.

Personally? I love it. I am always grabbing the paste when I spot it at the store. You can usually hunt it down in Asian stores or the international aisle of the grocery store.

4. Coconut Sugar Caramelized Plantains

Maybe you are looking for something that feels a little lighter but still hits that sweet spot? These fried plantains are undeniably healthier than a massive slice of cake, but they still taste totally sinful.

They get sweet and caramelized in the pan and are just begging to be served next to a scoop of ice cream. You can grab the coconut sugar at most big supermarkets these days.

5. Chocolate de Maní (Peanut “Cocoa”)

Wait, hold the phone. I had honestly never heard of this recipe until today, but I made it immediately. And here is the kicker: there is no actual chocolate in it.

I know, I was bummed for a second too. But then I took a sip. It is a warm roasted peanut and cinnamon drink that is basically a unique and totally delicious alternative to hot chocolate. Surprise favorite!

6. Belizean Fudge

Belize is high on my travel bucket list, but until I get there, I will be over here enjoying this creamy fudge. It is super simple to throw together since you just stir everything over low heat.

Plus, it is packed with yummy extras. The texture of the chewy raisins mixed with the warmth of nutmeg is just so cozy.

7. Pudín de Pan (Caribbean Bread Pudding)

Humble ingredients for the win! Bread pudding is forever one of my top desserts because it is frugal, creamy, and uses stuff we usually already have in the pantry.

This version uses raisins to add a great little textural pop to the dish. And if you want to soak them in a little rum first? I will not stop you.

8. Coquito Cheesecake (Coconut Rum Cheesecake)

Have you met the coquito yet? It is a Puerto Rican coconut holiday drink that is honestly so much better and easier than traditional eggnog. And now we are making it into a cheesecake.

It is creamy, warm, and wonderfully spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice in the filling. Plus it has an incredible coquito topping that just makes the whole thing sing.

9. Jamaican Toto (Caribbean Coconut Cake)

Calling all my coconut lovers! Usually, coconut just plays a backup role with milk or a few flakes, but not here. Coconut is the main event in this cake.

It features coconut milk and toasted coconut right inside the batter. And if you want to get extra fancy? Try drizzling it with a vanilla coconut glaze.

10. Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri

My first move on any trip is hitting the bar for a fruity daiquiri. A tropical spot just demands a tropical cocktail, right?

The secret to that resort-level flavor is skipping the ice and using frozen strawberries instead. Pair that with some fresh fruit and sugar syrup and it is pure perfection.

11. Black Cake (Caribbean Christmas Cake)

Do not be fooled by the name because this beauty is a fruity, nutty, rum-filled wonder. It gets that dark look from dark rum, and I love swapping in brown sugar to really deepen those flavors.

I also like to soak all the fruit in the rum for maximum goodness. Just know it is going to be quite dense and needs a solid hour and a half in the oven.

12. Jamaican Cornmeal Pudding

Cake for breakfast? Yes, please! The ingredients list looks a lot like porridge, but the difference is that this beauty gets baked until it sets up enough to slice.

I love using cornmeal here because it gives it that cornbread-like texture that gets slightly dense in the oven. And since it uses coconut milk and no eggs, it is vegan friendly!

13. Simple Besitos de Coco (Coconut Macaroons)

Did anyone else grow up eating these? I just adore how simple they are. I usually see the egg white version, but I particularly love this recipe.

It uses condensed milk which adds this extra level of sweetness and chew to the cookie that I just cannot resist.

14. Caribbean Coconut Sugar Cakes

Fun fact: coconut sugar does not actually taste like coconut. It is a lot like brown sugar but with extras like zinc and iron.

These adorable little cakes are totally vegan and gluten free, and you will often see them popping up at holidays and celebrations. I am loving the vibrant color, but you can skip the food coloring if you want to keep it natural.
